Welcome to the Elementary Division of Escuela Campo Alegre! The Elementary School at ECA is dedicated to providing a safe environment that is conducive to learning for all students. We know that each child has strengths and we help them build on these allowing for their individuality, diversity, and uniqueness.

Our mission rightly puts our students at the center of all that we do. We have a highly qualified and dedicated staff that are committed to addressing the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students.

Our curriculum continues to be standards-based and internationally recognized standards have been adopted for all areas of our curriculum. As well as offering the core subjects of Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, we have a strong specialist curriculum in Art, Music, Physical Education, Information Technology, Media/Library skills, and Spanish. We follow the philosophical belief that when outcomes are identified and taught utilizing common standards, unit plans, and innovation, enduring student understanding is the result.

We believe the education of the child is the shared responsibility of the school and family and work to foster a strong home/school partnership. GUIDING STATEMENTS:

ECA is an international Nursery to Grade 12 school. Until Grade 10 the school’s well-articulated curriculum taught in English, is based on the US Common Core standards. Students in grades 11 and 12, have the opportunity to fully participate in the IB Diploma Program or complete the ECA High School Diploma. ECA has a well established university and career guidance program.

COMMUNICATION ORGANIZATION AND TRANSITION

Communication Hierarchy

When questions or concerns arise, we ask parents to follow the communication hierarchy below:

  • Parent meets with teacher/faculty member and staff that the question or concern is related to (if not resolved, then move to step 2).
  • Parent meets with teacher/faculty member and with Elementary Counselor.
  • Parent meets with teacher/faculty member with Elementary Counselor and Elementary Principal

We are confident that most or all questions and concerns can be answered in step 1, and appreciate parents efforts to meet with the school faculty/staff directly related to the situation
first.

Collaborative Practices

All faculty members meet regularly to work on developing unit plans, assessment tools, lessons and assignments based on curriculum standards. Collaboration to ensure consistent expectations and improvement is an important and ongoing feature of our educational program.

School Hours

School begins promptly at 8:30 am and ends at 3:30 pm every day except Wednesday, which ends at 2:00 pm.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8:30 am to 3:30 pm Wednesday: 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

The Nursery program will follow the schedule below: Monday through Friday: 8:30 am to 12:15 pm.

Transition of Students

Students must exhibit developmental readiness and emotional maturity to move to the next grade level of their education. ECA believes that for the most successful social and emotional development, each child needs to progress one grade a year when developmentally ready. Criteria for movement decisions between grades shall include age, achievement, social
adjustment, attendance record, parent support, the availability of alternative programs and teacher recommendations. ECA reserves the right to determine the grade placement of all incoming and current students, and to make future adjustments to grade placement should it
feel the need to do so.

Back to School Night – During the first few weeks of school, parents will be invited to attend the ES “Back to School Night”. Parents will hear from their child’s teachers about their respective programs and procedures. Teachers will give parents general information about the curriculum to be covered, expectations, and goals for the coming school year. Please understand that “Back to School Night” is not an appropriate time to hold a conference with the teachers about a child’s educational progress. If a conference is needed with a specific teacher, please make an appointment with him/her. “Back to School Night” is for parents only, and therefore, we would appreciate efforts to make arrangements in advance so students do not attend.

Differentiated Instruction:

Instruction in reading, writing, and math is differentiated according to each child’s instructional level. Literacy is developed through a balanced program of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The math program develops skills and concepts throughout the elementary years and emphasizes the application of skills in the context of mathematical problem-solving. Social Studies include the study of History and Society, Geography, Economics, and Civics. Science provides a balanced study of the Living World, Material World, Physical World and Earth and Beyond. Our specialists – Arts, IT, PE, Science, Music and Spanish provide a rich and meaningful subject specific program.

ELEMENTARY HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

At ECA we believe that all students should have a healthy balance of work, recreation, family time, and sleep. As a result, any homework assigned will be meaningful, relevant and differentiated to meet individual student needs. All home learning at ECA is formative in nature and designed to support student learning. It will not be included in the academic achievement grade. Research shows a direct link between children who read at least twenty minutes independently every day and overall academic success. Homework in the Elementary School will focus on reading. Additional meaningful homework may be assigned and will be differentiated for specific student needs.

ELEMENTARY PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Early Childhood: In our Early Childhood classes we have created an environment where each child is respected as an individual and their uniqueness and diversity is recognized, celebrated, and built upon. Our faculty and staff are continually inspired by each child’s curiosity and wondrous view of the
world.

Nursery:​ In the three year old program, your child is provided a balance of learning and fun, structure and choice, group and individual exploration, along with time to ask questions and discover solutions. Nursery students attend a shortened day ending at 12:15 everyday. They receive instruction in art, Physical Education, music, and visit the library.

Pre-Kindergarten​ offers a full-day program. Daily learning centers involve the water table, art, dress-up areas and directed activities in language and math concepts. Children participate in a developmental physical education program. They receive instruction in art, Physical Education, music, and visit the library.

Kindergarten:​ offers a full day program with daily learning centers involving science, social studies, math and language activities. Instruction in Spanish, physical education, art and music is provided by specialists and students also visit the library. Technology is integrated into your child’s day.

First through fifth grades: The core curriculum includes Inquiry Units that integrate reading, writing, social studies, science and math. A strong emphasis is placed on developing literacy and numerical skills fundamental to advanced learning is provided. Children participate in a developmental physical education program. The library and technology programs promote the love of reading and teach students how to research information. Students also receive instruction in art and music.

SPANISH

The Spanish program provides a carefully sequenced program of reading and writing taught at a level appropriate for each student for both native and non-native Spanish speakers. Levels are determined through Spanish language assessments. Communication and oral language skills are emphasized. Vocabulary and grammar are integrated with the teaching of reading and writing, and Venezuelan Social Studies topics are also taught.

A Technology Integration Facilitator works with teachers and students to get the most out of technology in the classroom.

We work to promote a healthy, balanced and research guided use of technology among our student through various education and learning opportunities, and managing internet content access.

LIBRARY

The ECA Library’s mission is to help students and teachers become effective users of ideas and information. The library has an extensive collection of fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, and non-print resources available for elementary students, teachers, and parents.

DESTINY – the library’s web-based catalog of all library materials is available on the library web page from home or school. Research databases, recommended websites, eBooks and an online picture book library are available on the elementary library web page: https://eca.folletdestiny.com

Using the Library:
The library is open to students and parents before and after school (7:30 am – 4:30 pm). Students in grades 1-5 may use the library independently before school until 8:15 am and during recess on specified days. Students in grades Kinder – 5 th may check out books on a regular basis during class time or other specified times throughout the school day.

Borrowing Library Materials: If a student has overdue items, no additional materials may be checked out until these are returned or renewed. Replacement charges are required for lost or damaged library materials. Report cards may be withheld when students have outstanding library materials.

Library Computers: Unless designed for educational purposes, playing computer games in the library is not permitted.

Arts Week

An exhibit of ES student art work which includes a piece from each child. There is an Art Showfor all ES students near the end of the school year.

Assemblies

Assemblies are held throughout the year for both Red Shirts (ECE students) and White Shirts (Grades 1 to 5). Students in 1s​ t​ – 5t​ h​ grades have regular assemblies, where students are able to highlight particular projects or activities they have been working on related primarily to the Learner Profiles and reinforcing the Campo Way.

After School Activities

The school year is divided into three distinct activity sessions. The Co-curricular Activity Program is offered after school and is provided by community professionals, parents and staff. A combination of fee based activities provided by outside contractors and free ASA offered by school staff are available throughout the school year.

Campo Way

All students are expected to follow the Campo Way: Be respectful, Be responsible, Be safe, and Do your best. The Campo Way provides a framework for students and teachers to work together in a thoughtful, caring, and polite environment. The Campo Way describes how we act and how we treat one another in the elementary school. Campo Way standards are the values we live by when we are at school. The four values of the Campo Way are found below.

  • Wear proper uniform.
  • Protect school property and keep it clean.

International Fair

To celebrate the international diversity of our student body, the elementary school students and staff dress in traditional costumes, grouped according to nationalities and parade with pride! This school-wide event is sponsored by the Parent Association (PA).

Mini Olympics

Music is a part of everyday life in the elementary school. Assemblies, grade level presentations and school-wide music concerts provide an opportunity for every child to sing, dance and play a musical instrument. There is also are elementary musical in the spring and an Arts Day. School-wide and divisional talent shows for those wishing to audition and participate.

A strong home/school partnership is fundamental to the elementary school program. Teachers communicate weekly through their classroom Schoology and Seesaw pages, updates through the school wide use of Skyward, emails, and parent conferences.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS

Progress towards grade​ ​level standards is assessed in a variety of ways. A combination of class work, common assessment tasks and unit projects are routinely used to monitor learning. Teachers use student work to make adjustments to the pace of instruction, to differentiate learning activities and to modify teaching methods in order to promote student achievement. The following list represents some examples of common and ongoing assessments routinely used in grades 1-5.

Students receive reports for Spanish, Music, Art, and Physical Education. For students who are just beginning to learn English, they will receive an ELL grade. Learning support students receive a report based on an IEP (Individualized Educational Plan) goals.

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS

In grades 1-5, our students take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment which is used for internal planning of instruction and goal setting. The scores on this assessment are not incorporated into our reporting system and they do not affect your child’s report card. These tests are used by teachers to evaluate student performance and growth, set goals, and reflect on their own teaching practices.

MAP Assessment – Grades 1- 5 – twice a year, September and April.

REPORT CARDS

Throughout the year parents will receive three​ ​elementary report cards from the school regarding the progress of their child in grades N-5. Because ECA is in partnership with parents in educating the child, progress is reported orally and in written form at many times during the year. Please note that there is also a mid-trimester “check-point” twice​ ​a year. The purpose of this checkpoint is to ensure that by the designated dates, teachers and parents are in communication regarding any identified learning issues or concerns. Report cards should not be a surprise to parents. This may be achieved by:

  • Parents requesting to meet with the teacher.
  • Teacher requesting to meet with the parents.
  • Regular communication with parents (i.e. phone, email).

Please schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher whenever you would like to discuss his/her progress or you have a concern to share.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

ECA is a standard-based school. Progress is reported according to student achievement related to each standard being reported on. ECA standards are intentionally set high. This means that any student who meets the ECA standard has made very strong progress.

Nursery/Pre-Kindergarten:

Students are assessed based on the ​Early Learning Guidelines​ which are divided into seven major learning domains. Domains reflect what the young child knows and is learning in key areas of development. Within each domain, 28 broad outcomes are identified. Embedded in these outcomes are indicators that form the basis for all curriculum planning and implementation.

Campo Way

Students are assessed each trimester on their ability to follow the Campo Way of being responsible, respectful and safe, and always doing their best. Students will earn a (​1) Below Expectations, (2) Approaching Expectations, (3) Meets Expectations and (4) Exceeds Expectations.​ Please see the chart on page 10​ ​for specific details in each of the areas of the Campo Way Rules.

Parent/Teacher Conferences (PTCs)

There are scheduled conference times near the end of the ​first and second trimesters​. Parent participation is extremely important. The most important people at ECA are our students, and we encourage parent involvement in all parts of their education.

Student Led Conferences

There are scheduled conference times near the end of ​the third trimester.​ The basic concept of student led conferences is the students lead the conferences about their academic progress. They take ownership of their learning experience, and share those experiences with their parents, using a framework designed by their teacher.

Additional Conferences

Parents are welcomed and encouraged to schedule any other conference appointments they may need directly with the teacher. To make your interactions with the teachers meaningful please schedule conferences ahead of time.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL)

The ELL program at ECA offers English language instruction to non-native speakers of English beginning at grade one, and is designed to accommodate students of widely varying levels of language proficiency.

In Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten, ELL students are immersed in English and participate fully in the mainstream program. Kindergarten students are screened according to ELL Admission Criteria at the end of the academic year to determine the need for direct ELL services in grade one.

Students’ ELL levels are determined using the ​WIDA​ Assessment. ELL students are instructed according to the mainstream curriculum with additional support in English language arts from the ELL teacher. A small-group, pull-out strategy as well as a push in model is utilized for ELL support. ELL teachers develop and deliver a planned program of support in collaboration with the regular classroom teacher, and utilize a variety of instructional strategies based on research and experience with second language learners.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS – LEARNING SUPPORT

The ECA Learning Support Program serves students in Kinder through 5t​ h​ grade who present diverse learning needs. Consultative support is provided for students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Programs. ECA does not provide a full special education program; however, we are usually able to support elementary students with mild learning differences. Students may require additional academic support outside of school to successfully meet the demands of the grade level curriculum, or they may require services that enrich their educational program.

ECA has a student referral process for the identification of students who may require learning support. Parents who are concerned about their child’s progress can discuss the need to complete a referral with their child’s classroom teacher. An analysis, which will include assessment of varying types, will assist in determining ways the student could be supported. Students who present very specific learning needs may require an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) to document qualifying data, specific goals, strategies, and accommodations that could support achievement.

The type of intervention and the level of support from Learning Support personnel are dependent on the needs of the student and the available resources. When students present moderate to severe learning challenges that may require direct support from a Learning Support teacher, parents may be requested to have their child evaluated by an Educational Psychologist from an outside agency to ensure support and instruction is adequate, and is fully focused on using an individual student’s strengths to be successful.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICES

The elementary counselor is available to assist students in all aspects of their personal and academic growth. The counselor in collaboration with the homeroom teacher provides guidance programs through regularly scheduled instructional times. Transition strategies for incoming and exiting students are in place. The counselor works with families and teachers to support positive student behaviors. The counselor facilitates parenting classes as well as parent discussions on topics of interest or concerns brought forth by community members. The counselor is also available for individual counseling, special needs concerns, referrals to outside agencies and consultation with parents.

HEALTH OFFICE

A full-time registered nurse is available during school hours to provide first aid care as well as information about local health care professionals. All new students will be screened for vision and hearing. Subsequently, screenings are completed every other year.

If your child is absent from school due to illness, please inform the Elementary Office by 9:00 a.m. daily. In consideration of other children, please ​DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF HE/SHE IS SICK. ​Your child should be kept at home if any of the following symptoms are present:

  • Fever (your child should have a normal temperature for 24 hours after a high fever)
  • Diarrhea, Vomiting, Stomach Cramps
  • Arash
  • Nasal discharge that is green or yellowish

If your child has been exposed to a contagious illnesses he/she should be kept at home, and the circumstances of his/her condition should be reported to the class teacher and the Health Office. These may include:

  • Viral infections
  • Pin/Tapeworms
  • Measles, Mumps, Chicken Pox
  • Conjunctivitis or ’Pink Eye’
  • Scarlet Fever
  • Hand, Foot Mouth Disease
  • Head Lice
  • H1N1

Please notify the school nurse if your child has any of the above. Appropriate action will be necessary before your child returns to school.

ECA Behavior Expectations for Elementary Students

CAMPO WAY/ LEARNER PROFILES

All students are expected to follow the Campo Way: Be respectful, Be responsible, Be safe, and Do your best. The Campo Way provides a framework for students and teachers to work together in a thoughtful, caring, and polite environment. The Campo Way describes how we act and how we treat one another in the elementary school. Campo Way standards are the values we live by when we are at school. The four values of the Campo Way are found below. Please note that the Campo Way song can be found at the back of this handbook.

Be Responsible:

  • Be punctual and prepared for class.
  • Complete homework.
  • Bring materials to class.
  • Follow directions.
  • Wear proper uniform.
  • Protect school property and keep it clean.

Be Safe:

  • Share space with others; allow room to pass.
  • Use materials and equipment safely.
  • Be careful on the stairs; keep to the right.
  • Play games that avoid physical contact.
  • Report problems that may be dangerous.

STUDENT RESPECT

Be Respectful:

  • Use polite language with everyone.
  • Follow directions of adults.
  • Listen carefully to others.
  • Use a quiet voice inside the school.
  • Treat others as you would like to be treated.
  • Consider the needs of others.

Do your Best:

  • Be persistent; don’t give up.
  • Be resourceful; find a way to solve challenges. Participate; ask questions.

  • Elementary students have a right to be free from harassment, bullying, and prejudice.
  • All members of the ECA community have the right to a safe learning environment and personal well-being.
  • The intent of the above statements is to provide a safe, pleasant, fair, and caring environment for learning.

Infractions​ – Occasionally, the school is faced with more serious disciplinary issues. These situations include, but are not limited to: insubordination towards an adult, academic dishonesty, fighting, disrupting classes, or damaging school or personal property; conduct seriously endangering the safety of oneself or others; theft and vandalism; a large amount of unexcused absences and /or tardies; cheating on tests, examinations, assignments or homework as well as the plagiarizing of material from secondary sources, lack of respect for others, bullying or harassment of others, the possession of any object which would be considered a weapon or resembles a weapon and is used in a threatening way.

Consequences​ – Disciplinary matters may be handled by teachers depending on the situation. Severe violations will be handled by the ES Principal after consulting with the class teacher and the Elementary Guidance Counselor. A student who violates behavioral expectations can expect to receive consequences commensurate to the offense; consequences will escalate for repeated infractions. Additionally, students may be assigned to receive their education in an alternative setting if deemed necessary.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY

The use, possession, distribution or sale of tobacco, vapes, JUULS, drugs, alcohol or inappropriate illegal chemical substances on school grounds or at school activities; or coming to school or a school function under the influence of tobacco, vapes, JUULS, drugs or alcohol or illegal inappropriate chemical substances is prohibited. For complete details please refer to the ECA Substance Abuse Policy​.

ECA ELEMENTARY STUDENT DRESS CODE

All ECA students are required to wear the official school uniform shirt with solid navy blue or blue denim pants, bermudas or skirts. No cut-off pants, tights, workout pants, transparent leggings, or torn clothes are allowed. Students who choose to wear a sweater in addition to the school shirt will be required to wear the official school sweatshirt or a navy blue/black sweater/sweatshirt with no logos. No sandals or earrings on boys are allowed. Descriptions of the two elementary uniforms are below. Parents will be called to bring appropriate uniform attire for violations.

Nursery, Pre-kinder and Kindergarten students:

  • Shirt – Red uniform shirt with school logo
  • Solid navy blue pants or jeans, shorts or skirt
  • Shoes or sneakers of any color are acceptable; however, closed toes shoes are preferred.

Elementary School Students-Grades 1-5

  • Shirt –White uniform shirt with school logo
  • Navy blue pants, jeans, Bermudas or skirt
  • Shoes or sneakers of any color are acceptable; however, closed toes shoes are preferred.

Footwear ​– Students should wear proper footwear to school. For their own safety, footwear should cover toes (front) and have a back restraint. Sneakers or tennis shoes are required for physical education, recreation and athletic activities. Flip-flops are not acceptable at any time. Any other deviation from the school uniform must be given prior approval by the ES Principal.

PE Dress Code​ – On PE days it is important that your child comes to school dressed for physical education. He/she should wear: sneakers & socks; school shirt; navy blue shorts or sweatpants. When classes are scheduled to take place on the Field we also recommend that children wear a hat, sunscreen and carry a bottle of water.

For safety reasons jewelry should not be worn to physical education classes and is generally discouraged at any time. The school will not accept responsibility for missing items

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

Language of Inclusion – ECA is mindful of the power of language and words, and acknowledges that what individuals say, and how individuals say things, directly affect a person’s perception of intentions, goals, and values. We encourage the development of positive means of communication that foster a sense of community and acceptance. To facilitate an accepting community students and teachers should, when in a group, use a language which is common to all members of the group–a language of inclusion.

Non-Participation in PE – If your child is well enough to attend school, it is in his/her interest to participate in each Physical Education class. For special medical situations we will make every possible attempt to provide an adaptive program.

Students that are not able to participate in Physical Education due to illness or injury must present a signed note, contact the ES office or email the PE teacher on the day they have physical education explaining where possible the reason(s) for not being able to participate.

Gymnasium Expectations

  • Gum chewing, eating or drinking (other than water) in the gym is prohibited.
  • All trash must be put in a trash can.
  • Students are only allowed in the gym with adult/teacher supervision.
  • Only sport shoes are allowed on gym floor.
  • Inappropriate behavior is not allowed, e.g. rough play, foul language, poor sportsmanship.
  • Treat equipment with care and return equipment to its proper place.
  • Report all injuries to an adult/teacher/supervisor.

Climbing Wall Expectations

  • Climbing or rappelling on the climbing wall must be done when accompanied by ECA certified climbing staff only.
  • Only authorized and trained personnel may bring students into the wall area.
  • Climbing or traversing without safety equipment is not permitted above the yellow line for elementary students.
  • Only the climber, the belayer and the next person to climb are permitted in the area in front of the climbing wall.
  • Food or drink in the climbing area (other than water) is prohibited.
  • All accidents or injuries must be reported immediately to the teacher. After School Sports Expectations
  • Parent permission must be given before participation is allowed.
  • All participants must adhere to after-school activity rules.
  • Students are expected to finish the sporting season they start.
  • Good sportsmanship is expected by all: players, coaches, fans, and parents.
  • All participants must dress appropriately for the activity.

Field Trip Travel Expectations

  • Students must have a permission slip, obtained from a teacher and signed by a parent or guardian, in order to travel off campus with their class.
  • Students must exhibit good behavior and good sportsmanship while en-route to, during and en- route home from off-campus events.

Theater Expectations​ – Our goal is to put the ECA Core values of respect and consideration into practice to ensure a positive community experience for the audience and performers that models real world theater behavior. The ECA school community should observe the following Theater guidelines:

  • The audience should stay seated during the performance and avoid talking.
  • Applause is utilized to show appreciation for the performers.
  • Unnecessary clapping, whistling, calling out, etc., disturbs the performers and audience, and therefore should not occur.
  • Toys/games and food/drink should are not allowed in the theater.
  • Late arrivals may be seated in the upper rows of the theater.
  • Elementary students may be in the theater only with adult/teacher supervision.
  • Feet should be on the floor and not placed on the back of the theater seats.
  • Appropriate respectful theater etiquette is expected from students when attending an event.

School Bus​ ​Information: ​A bus service to and from the school is provided in the morning and in the afternoon. A late bus (4:45 pm) is provided for students who remain after school for special after school activities on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There is no late bus on Wednesday. A fee schedule and the bus policy can be obtained from the bus coordinator.

If a student misses the afternoon bus, the student should go directly to the Elementary Office and the parent or guardian will be contacted while the student waits for a ride in the supervised area.

Students should not be in the STAR Plaza, on the field or in the cafeteria after school unless they are in a supervised activity or with parents/guardians.

ECA students, on the buses, are expected to follow the same standards of behavior as required at school. Students will always show respect to the driver and other students. Students will at all times exhibit safe and respectful behaviors and:

  • Board and exit the bus in an orderly, safe manner
  • Check in with the driver when boarding the bus
  • Remain seated while on the bus and wear seat belts
  • Talk with other passengers in a normal voice
  • Keep bus aisles free from obstruction
  • Avoid rough play/pushing/wrestling
  • Listen to and follow the instructions from the driver and/or the monitor. The driver’s job is to concentrate on driving safely, so please don’t speak to him unless it is an emergency.
  • Be on time at the designated bus stop in the morning and go promptly to the buses at dismissal.
  • Do not lean out of the windows or doors of the bus, keep all parts of the body inside the bus windows.
  • Nothing should be thrown inside or out of the bus at any time.
  • Respect the property of others and the comfort and safety of everyone on the bus.
  • Parents/students will be held responsible for any damage to or vandalism of bus property.
  • If a student is going to ride on a different bus than they normally use they must present a note, signed by parents, to the elementary office before 1:00 pm.
  • Students may ride the buses with a friend, only if they are enrolled in the bus service and by presenting a note signed by parents to the elementary office before 1:00 pm.
  • Consequences for rule violations will be commensurate to the infraction and escalate as needed.

ATTENDANCE/STUDENT ABSENCES

It is very difficult to make up for being in an elementary classroom learning environment. Success with academic and social learning requires regular attendance at school. A school calendar is given to each ECA family before the commencement of a new school year to ensure that each student will be in class on each scheduled school day throughout the academic year. Students need to be in school unless an illness or other emergency prevents their attendance. We strongly encourage parents to plan their vacations and medical/dental visits carefully so that students do not miss school.

When returning to school after being absent, a student should bring a note or an email be sent by a parent/guardian indicating the dates and reasons for the absence. Notes/emails should be directed to the homeroom teacher and cc’d to the ES office.

An excused absence is typically caused by personal illness or an unavoidable family situation. Making up missed work, which must be completed within a reasonable time, is the student’s responsibility.

ABSENCES DUE TO FAMILY TRAVEL

Parents and students are advised that the school strongly discourages students being absent from school at times other than the scheduled vacations. Extended weekends/holidays/vacations are highly discouraged. Teachers are not required to provide make-up work for them, but they will work with the student to provide as much of the work as they are able to complete if they know well in advance. Requests for work should be made by contacting the homeroom teacher well in advance.

Any make-up/homework not completed and turned in by the due date (as determined by teachers) will not receive credit. Teachers need time to prepare work if a student will be absent for reasons other than illness; therefore, the teacher and the ES office must be informed in writing at least two weeks in advance.

EARLY ARRIVAL/LATENESS TO SCHOOL

It is important for all students to arrive at school on time by 8:15 a.m latest. When a student enters in class late, it is disrupting to the entire class. Traffic can be unpredictable, so we ask families to make every effort to arrive at school on time. All students are required to be in attendance at the beginning of each school day at 8:15 a.m. Students who are late to school must report to the elementary office for a tardy pass before reporting to class.

LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY DURING THE DAY

Parents should send a signed note to their child’s teacher letting the teacher know of the upcoming early departure as well as sending an email to the ES Office. This is particularly important if someone other than the parent will be picking up the child later in the day. Students leaving early must get a pass from the ES Office. Prior to departure, the parent or designee must go to the elementary office first to sign the student out. The elementary office will give the parent a signed pass and then the parent is able to leave with the child. This pass must be given to the guard as you exit through the gate. While recognizing that these steps may be time-consuming, we feel that ensuring your child’s safety must be the top priority. Please allow adequate time for the early departure process.

LEAVING BEFORE THE END OF A TERM AND END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR

It is in the student’s best interest to remain at school throughout the entire term. If unusual circumstances require a student to leave before the last day of the term, parents must complete a withdrawal form available in the Admissions Office as soon as possible. During the school year, five days’ notice of withdrawal is necessary to prepare official transcripts. If a child withdraws at the end of the year, transcripts will be available the week following the last day of class. If records are required before the actual withdrawal date, parents should use their copy of the most recent report card.

Report cards and transcripts will be withheld in the case of students who have outstanding financial obligations to the school, or who have failed to discharge any other incurred obligations.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT/PARENT ASSOCIATION

ECA is parent friendly school. We welcome parent participation with your child’s education. To do so effectively, please note the following (your consideration and support is appreciated):
In an effort to maximize the academic day and minimize classroom disruptions during class time, parents are requested to schedule appointments to meet teachers ahead of time.

During the school day, please drop off items for your child(ren) through the front office only. Before and after school are the only times to take items directly to the classroom or to try and see a teacher without an appointment. The office will readily assist you so that the classroom learning environment is not interrupted. Please bring any concerns directly to the appropriate teacher first, and then if necessary to the counselor and the administrator for clarification or resolution. Additionally:

  • Help instill student pride, confidence, and a positive attitude in your child about the school and their teachers.
  • Support school policies on behavior and attendance.
  • Encourage students to take responsibility for completion of all assignments.
  • Monitor and communicate to teachers about the level of difficulty and/or challenges students experience, such as school work, relationships with peers, etc.
  • Take an active role in Parent Association, volunteer activities, and school events.

As a parent of a student at ECA you automatically qualify as a member. No formal introduction is needed, and there is no charge to join the ​Parent Association.

The ECA Parent Association ​is an organization of parent volunteers who work in support of the administration, faculty, students and the chosen charitable organizations of ECA

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

EXPECTATIONS FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE TO TRAVEL Both the homeroom teacher and elementary office should be notified in writing or email when your child is being left under the supervision of someone else while you are traveling. Parents must provide specific details regarding who has permission to make decisions regarding transportation/pick-up and emergency. Please be sure to include all contact information – email, phone numbers, medical instructions, etc.

BIRTHDAY INVITATIONS/TREATS

Invitations to parties may only be distributed in the classroom if all classmates are invited to the party. Otherwise, invitations should be distributed outside of school. Snacks and/or treats are allowed on birthdays as long as there are enough for the entire class, and they may only be given at snack or lunch time, not during academic time or in the classroom. Please contact the teacher ahead of time to work out an acceptable

CAR ACCESS

Only cars with the ECA security sticker are allowed entry to the campus. Stickers are available to parents in the Main Office. The guards at the front gate have been instructed to make no exceptions to this rule.

DISMISSAL CHANGES

Any change regarding dismissal plans has to be sent in writing or email to the homeroom teacher and the ES office by ​12:00 pm.

ES WAITING AREA

All elementary students need to be supervised by their parents after school if they are not involved in a specific activity. If for any reason a student is not under parental supervision,there is a designated supervised area where ES students can wait until the parents can pick up students. The student Waiting Area is on the Blue Bench es in the Star Plaza. We appreciate full parental cooperation with student supervision and behavior while they wait to be picked up.

LOST AND FOUND

The Lost and Found closet is located in front of the elevators near the Health Office. Items found should be turned into this area immediately.​ ​Periodically​ ​all unclaimed items will be donated to a charity. Items of higher value are returned to the Administration Office. These items will then be locked in a safe place until they are claimed by the rightful owner. Please mark all lunch boxes, book bags, and sweaters with your child’s name and class so we can return items directly to them when found.

LUNCH AND SNACK

Elementary students should bring a healthy snack to eat during their morning recess. Students from Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade have the option of using Cafeteria services or bringing their lunch from home. Tickets for lunch may be purchased in the morning prior to 8:30 am in the STAR plaza. The menus are pre-selected and copies of the fixed menus can be found on ECA’s website.

NON-SCHOOL ITEMS

Students should not bring objects which are hazardous to others or which interfere with the school day. These items include, but are not limited to: sports/trading cards, knives, swords, toys, toy guns/ weapons, squirt guns, or sharp objects to school. We discourage students from bringing cell phones, digital music players, and other electronics, games, etc. Cell phones, if brought to school cannot be used during the school day. Cell phones should only be used after school to contact parents/drivers, confirming pick up, etc. For emergencies, students must use office phones so that school personnel are aware of the situation. Should a student bring the above items to school and they get lost, broken or go missing, the school assumes no responsibility or liability in the matter.

STUDENT VISITORS

The school restricts student visitors to the school during class hours. When permission is given for a non-ECA student to visit, the request must be made to the ES office, at least one week before the planned visit. Permission will be granted on a case by case basis.

SCHOOL STORE / SUPPLIES

The student store is located inside the main building and sells school uniforms and other non-compulsory items. The hours the student store will be open are posted outside the store.

TELEPHONES
Students​ should not​ use cell phones during the school day. School personnel should be aware of all calls to home during the day, ​and therefore cell phones should not be used for this purpose​. If an emergency call needs to be made, students should consult/interact with the class teacher or with the Elementary Office. If students are ill, they will be sent to the nurse by their teacher. The office phones should be used only with the permission of the Elementary Secretary.

TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks are loaned to students and must be returned once the class finishes. Students must pay for textbooks which are not returned or are damaged. Since most of the materials used at ECA are purchased overseas, textbooks are difficult to replace. Please take care not to damage or misplace these textbooks. The cost to replace a lost textbook varies; the charges for handling and shipping are factored into the replacement cost. School records and reports may be withheld if missing textbook or library charges are not paid.

ECA STUDENT PROTECTION POLICY (SPP)

Revised and Approved by the ECA Board of Directors on May 31, 2017

The Escuela Campo Alegre student protection policy is informed by the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child, Venezuelan law and the International Task Force on Child Protection (ITFCP).

Student abuse, neglect, and bullying are serious concerns in schools throughout the world and are obstacles to their education and development. Schools hold a particular institutional role in society to protect their students and to ensure that each student is afforded a safe and secure environment in which to learn and develop. Educators and school staff, having the opportunity to observe and interact with students over extended periods of time, are in a unique position to identify “at-risk” students and circumstances. As such, schools and educators have both a professional and an ethical obligation to identify students who are at risk for abuse, neglect, or bullying and/or in need of support and/or protection. Schools and educators must provide services and assistance required to address such circumstances for both the student and his/her family. In addition to protecting students from abuse, neglect, and bullying, schools and educators must report any knowledge of suspected or identified abusers and sex offenders.

All members of the ECA faculty, staff, and student body are required to acknowledge, sign, and adhere to the school’s Code of Conduct.

The Student Protection Policy is included therein.

Definition of Forms of Student Abuse/Threats to Safety (Hereinafter “Abuse”):
1.
​ ​Physical Abuse: ​Intentional (non-accidental) physical injury of a student by another student, a parent, a person responsible for the care of the child, or any member of the ECA community.

2. Sexual Abuse:

a) Any unwanted/non consensual sexual activity or situation between students is not accepted and is considered sexual abuse.

b) Any sexual activity/advancement/verbal interaction or suggestion or situation involving any adult community member or a person responsible for the care of the child is considered as sexual abuse.

3. Emotional Abuse:​ An act of commission or omission by a student, a parent, a person responsible for the care of the child, or any member of the ECA community that significantly impairs the emotional well-being of the affected student. Such behaviors include humiliation; threats to injure or withdraw physical or emotional support; isolation from social contacts; and withholding things necessary for mental health such as respect, security, limits, attention, affection and love.

4. Physical Neglect:​ Withholding (by a parent, a person responsible for the care of the child, or any member of the ECA community) of those things necessary for the student’s health and normal development. This includes adequate food, clothing, shelter, sleep, supervision, medical treatment and/or education.

5. Psychological Neglect: ​Neglect occurs when a student is isolated, ignored, when nurturing is repeatedly withheld, or when ongoing adequate time/attention is not given to the student from parents, a person responsible for the care of the child, or any member of the ECA community.

6. Bullying:​ Any repeated interactions, contact from, actions by, or attitudes communicated by a member of the ECA community which make a student feel threatened, humiliated or unsafe.

Reporting Procedures for Abuse:

ECA requires that all members of the community familiarize themselves with these reporting requirements in the event that they witness or become aware of student Abuse/endangerment. Updates are regularly provided to members of the community regarding changes in policy/procedures and current student protection practice through staff meetings, the faculty handbook, and periodic electronic community communication. Expectations for reporting include acting with tact, confidentiality, and sympathy; avoiding “over-questioning” of the victim; and assembling complete and detailed notes (including date and time of any observations or conversations with the student) immediately.

1. Any member of the ECA community that experiences, observes, or receives a report of signs and/or behaviors that suggest Abuse or a violation of the spirit of the school’s code of conduct must immediately notify the Guidance Counselor and/or the Divisional Principal.

2. The Guidance Counselor, the Divisional Principal, and the reporting faculty or community member must review, organize, and document all data points. All reported Abuse cases will then be reported to the Superintendent immediately by the Divisional Principal.

3. Three potential case scenarios are addressed in this policy:

A. “No Grounds” case​ – If the Guidance Counselor, the Divisional Principal, the reporting faculty or community member, the Superintendent, and other involved personnel determine there are no grounds for the Abuse allegations or a violation of the spirit of the code of conduct then the result of the case will be officially documented. The gathered information and a record of discussions held will be kept on file and electronically available for Board members to access/refer to as needed.

B. “Suspicion Remains” case ​- If evidence is lacking or incomplete but suspicion for Abuse remains then the Guidance Counselor, the Divisional Principal, the reporting faculty member, and the Superintendent will maintain confidential timed and dated notes and meet regularly to evaluate any further developments in the case in question. Disclosure of ongoing cases of suspected Abuse will be reported to the Board and the involved parents as soon as possible. The gathered information will be kept on file and periodic updates, in writing, will be provided to the Board as the circumstances of the case merit.

C. “Abuse Likely or Confirmed” case ​– If documented evidence suggests Abuse (including that which is alleged to have occurred off campus) the Superintendent, following written disclosure to and discussion with the Board of Directors, will immediately report cases of suspected Abuse to the appropriate authorities. Such authorities include the alleged perpetrator’s employer and/or embassy, the appropriate child protection agency in the home country of the alleged perpetrator, and in accordance with Venezuelan law the appropriate local authorities. The Superintendent, in consultation with the Board and legal/professional advisors, will take all actions necessary to ensure the safety of the student and the community.

4. In the case of Abuse,​ the Divisional Principal and the Superintendent will determine the appropriate course of action for the protection of the victim and discipline for the aggressor. The gathered information will be kept on file and timely periodic updates, in writing, will be provided to the Board as the circumstances/status of the case merits.

5. All other ECA community members​ will be informed of reported Abuse allegations on a need to know basis only. Parents of the student(s) involved in reported Abuse allegations will be notified as early in the process as is appropriate for the safety and security of all involved parties. Any additional written information/observations from other personnel will be included in documentation.

6. All ECA community members​ are expected to report any knowledge of suspected or identified child abusers or sex offenders within the school community. In the event that an ECA community member is alleged or discovered to be an abuser or sex offender, ECA will conduct a full investigation and involve the appropriate authorities. The investigation shall proceed in accordance with the administrative reporting procedure outlined in this policy.

ECA is committed to protecting each of its students in every aspect of school life. As such, ECA distributes this policy annually to all stakeholders through Faculty and Divisional Handbooks, Faculty and Divisional information sessions/meetings, Parent Handbooks, and the ECA school website.

ECA Code of Conduct

Escuela Campo Alegre is committed to the safety and protection of children in every aspect of school life. The ECA Student Protection Policy (SPP) and Code of Conduct applies to all faculty, staff, employees, volunteers, contractors and students who represent the school and who interact with students in both a direct and/or unsupervised capacity.

I have read the ECA SPP as approved by the ECA Board of Directors on May 31, 2017 and available on the school website: www. ecak12.com. I promise to strictly adhere to follow the SPP and also to comply with rules and guidelines in this Code of Conduct document as a condition of my contract providing services to students attending Escuela Campo Alegre.

I will:

  • Treat everyone with respect, patience, integrity, courtesy, dignity, and consideration.
  • Never be alone with children and/or youth at school activities without another adult being notified.
  • Use positive reinforcement rather than criticism, competition, or comparison when working with children and/or youth.
  • Avoid and be aware of the possible harm and misunderstanding associated with the use of sarcasm, especially with second language learners.
  • Maintain appropriate physical boundaries at all times and touch children – when necessary – only in ways that are appropriate, public, and non-sexual.
  • Be aware of and comply with the spirit of the ECA SPP.
  • Comply with the mandatory reporting regulations of the ECA SPP with the ECA SPP policy to report suspected student abuse or suspected bullying to the guidance Counselor, relevant School Principal, Director of Support Services or Superintendent.
  • Cooperate fully in any investigation related to student abuse or suspected bullying

I will not:

  • Touch or speak to a child and/or youth in a sexual or other inappropriate manner.
  • Inflict any physical or emotional abuse such as striking, spanking, shaking, slapping, humiliating, ridiculing, threatening, or degrading children and/or youth.
  • Smoke or use tobacco products, or possess, or be under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or inappropriate chemical substances at any time while working/interacting with children and/or youth.
  • Give a student who is not my own a ride home alone, or any other place, without the knowledge of their parent or guardian.
  • Accept gifts from or give gifts to students without the knowledge of their parents or guardians.
  • Buy alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, inappropriate chemical substances, videos, or reading material that is inappropriate and give it to students. Staff members, volunteers or contractors should not accept gifts from, or give gifts to children without the knowledge of their parents or guardians.
  • Engage in private communications with children via text messaging, email, Facebook, Twitter or similar forms of electronic or social media except for activities strictly involving school business without the knowledge of their parents / guardians or the relevant school principal. Electronic communication that takes place over the ECA school network or platform is subject to periodic monitoring.
  • Use profanity in the presence of students at any time.

I understand that as a person working with, providing services to or interacting with students at Escuela Campo Alegre, I am subject to a criminal history background record check. My signature confirms that I have read the ECA SPP and this Code of Conduct document and that as a person working/interacting with students I agree to comply with and follow the rules and guidelines as stated in these documents. I understand that any action inconsistent with the ECA SPP, the Code of Conduct or failure to take action mandated by the ECA SPP or Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of your contract with Escuela Campo Alegre.

Adults working at Escuela Campo Alegre are all required to follow this Code of Conduct.

It is important that students inform​ ​parents or another adult if one of your teachers is breaking one of these rules.

The ​Code of Conduct​ also applies to the conduct of all students at ECA while at school, on any school premises, or while under the supervision of a school authority, or for conduct while not at school, but is a school-sponsored event. A ​“school-sponsored event” ​shall include, but is not limited to, school field trips, athletic contests, musical, artistic and intellectual events wherein the school district is a participant, no matter where those trips, contests or events are held, including the period of transportation to and from those trips, contests and events, and the transportation to and from school.

Students have a right to a life free from harassment and discrimination​ and a legal right to an education free from sexual harassment or discrimination of any kind. Thus, the purpose of this policy is to provide, as far as possible, a safe, pleasant, nondiscriminatory, and humane atmosphere for learning.

Reporting by ECA Faculty and Staff

All staff members of the school, including teachers and support staff, are expected to be vigilant and to report suspected or actual cases of bullying or any form of harassment to the Elementary Guidance Counsellor or Elementary School Principal.

ECA Faculty and Staff will:

  • treat all students the way they would like to be treated by being kind and fair.
  • help students do better on their schoolwork by telling you what you’ve done well, and also by politely suggesting what you could do better.
  • always use respectful and nice words.
  • they will never tell inappropriate jokes or make you uncomfortable by saying bad or mean things to students.
  • respond if they think a student is being abused or harmed by someone else.

They will tell the Guidance Counsellor, Elementary Principal or Superintendent of the school. It is a school rule that adults need to help children that need help or support .

They will not:

  • be alone with students unless your parents or another adult knows about it.
  • hit or threaten to hit a student in any way.
  • never embarrass a student on purpose making them feel bad or sad.
  • ever touch your private body parts. If an adults touches you, it should only be around other people or in a nice way that does not make you feel uncomfortable.
  • smoke cigarettes, chew tobacco, do drugs, or drink alcoholic drinks or use illegal/inappropriate substances while they are working with students.
  • give you a ride in a car if your parents do not know where you are.
  • take gifts from or give gifts to students unless your parents know about the gifts. Adults are never allowed to give students inappropriate gifts that children should not have like cigarettes, drugs or illegal/inappropriate substances.
  • have secret text messages, e-mails, or chats with students unless it’s about homework or classwork. If they do have secret chats with you, your parents should know about it.
  • swear or use cuss words when students are around.

All adults working at Escuela Campo Alegre are all required to follow the Code of Conduct. It is important that you tell your parents or another adult if one of your teachers or an adult is breaking one of these rules.

In addition to the information and guidelines covered in the previous pages, parents are expected to read, review and agree to the additional policies listed below.
