Academic Year 2023-2024 – Thursday, November 23, 2023

(en español más abajo)

Hello ECA Community!

This is a great week to give thanks and I would like to thank each one of you as parents of our community for the team work that you provide in your houses when you work alongside your children. Thank you for continuing to support ECA in our mission to provide the best possible education for your children.

You may have noticed the enormous Christmas tree we have in Star Plaza that was kindly donated by Liliana from our PA. In order to have some holiday spirit and to decorate the tree we will have a Casual / Christmas theme dress day on Friday, December 1st. All staff and students are invited to dress in Christmas colors or casual clothes and to donate a Christmas ornament to hang on the tree or $2 which would go towards buying Christmas decorations.

Next week I am expecting to have short parent and student surveys available to give feedback to our principals and teachers. Please take the 5-10 minutes to fill them out as they are very important as part of our growth mindset to constantly improve the services we provide as educators.

If you would like to work on the CIS re-accreditation process with us at ECA, there will be a parent opportunity next week on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 or Friday at 8:30. We will be looking at our mission, vision and guiding statements (see the document here). If you are interested in participating, please fill out the following survey. The sessions will be done in English and the final answers will be provided in English. It would be helpful if a few parents brought laptops to help us answer the 3 questions from CIS. The questions are:

  1. To what degree are the school’s guiding statements – mission, vision values, and strategic intent – appropriate for all members of the school community?
  2. How well are the school’s guiding statements implemented in practice?
  3. What are the school’s strengths and what are its challenges in implementing its guiding statements effectively?

Admission process for the next school year (2024-2025) has already begun. If new members of your family would like to join ECA, please contact Ana Cristina Oteyza (anacdo@ecak12.com)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Año académico 2023-2024 – jueves 23 de noviembre de 2023

(en español más abajo)

¡Hola comunidad ECA!

Jeff Richardson

Congratulations to all of our participants and staff who put together the SAMUN 2023 event at ECA which is going on today and tomorrow.

Next week there is no school on Thursday or Friday due to our Thanksgiving break.

Very soon parents and students will be receiving survey links in order to give us feedback about our teachers and section principals as part of their appraisal system.

We are working on our re-accreditation documentation for CIS which requires all stakeholders to participate in different ways. In the near future I will be inviting parents to volunteer to come in and give feedback around our mission, vision, and guiding statements. This is done through 3 specific questions that are designed by CIS.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you to all of the families who were able to participate in our 2nd annual Sports Day that was a great success. Thanks to Ana Cristina Oteyza for organizing this event!

Thanks to the Parent Association for all of their hard work with Halloween which was also a very successful event.

This month as a school we are working hard to prepare for our CIS Re-accreditation visit in March. We will be submitting our work to them in January and we are focusing on teaching and learning in order to offer the best possible learning experiences for your children. We will also be taking a deep dive into our curriculum to increase the rigor overall for our entire academic program.

On a personal note I want to share with you some information. I’d like to inform you that for family reasons my wife Liliana and Matias and Sofia are returning to Medellin to be with our extended family there. They will be enrolling in a bilingual school from January until further notice. Liliana is looking to study and/or open a small business. I will keep you updated as to how circumstances develop over time. I want to also reassure you that I am 100% committed to ECA and I am very happy here in Caracas. I will visit my family during the holidays and we will maintain a relationship between cities as many families do. As a result I will be traveling with them to get them installed in Medellin again. We have decided to offer English classes for our office and maintenance staff after school using our overseas teachers who want to help with this project. Mr. Derrick, Mr. Scott, Ms. Steffi and myself will be teaching these classes to the 15 people who signed up. If there are any parents who would like to teach as well and have the level of English please contact me directly. We will be doing the classes from 4-5pm during the week. We will also be looking at the interest level of parents to learn English as well in the second semester as I have had several parents ask me about this possibility. I will keep you updated as we start looking to plan those classes.

¡Hola comunidad ECA!

Matilda The Musical!

Superintendent’s Bulletin #11

Academic Year 2023-2024 – Friday, October 20th, 2023

Hello ECA Community! Here are a few reminders:

Thank you ECA community for the overwhelming support in donations for Abraham Castellar’s family.  We truly will make a difference for his family with this campaign.  This is the way to live the Campo Way! It was a great way to educate our children on the importance of helping others out when they are in need.

Surveys have gone out for after school activities so please make sure you give us some feedback and fill them out.

Today we had a brainstorming session to define the value proposition of ECA in the near future. We had representatives from the educational and operational areas, Board members, students, and the PA. We spent 4 hours defining what ECA should be focusing on. We will have one more session in the next few weeks and then share our findings with the Board and then the community.

We are celebrating Halloween next Friday so please make sure you read the information and expectations from each section.

Remember next Saturday, October 28th is our Family Sports Day. Make sure you complete this FORM and purchase your tickets this week.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the parent teacher conferences in elementary. Lots of great information was shared and we were happy to have you on campus learning about your children’s growth.

This week we have begun the recruitment process for hiring overseas teachers for the next school year.  This is never an easy time but we have to look at what is best for the future of ECA.  In the second semester we will share with you the information about the new cohort of teachers coming in and we will recognize and celebrate the teachers who are moving on to new placements.

Have a great weekend!

Hola comunidad ECA!

Superintendent’s Bulletin #5

Academic Year 2023-2024 – Friday, September 1st, 2023

Hello ECA Community! Time is flying and we are now in September. Thank you for your dedication and teamwork with us to provide the best learning experience possible for your children. Here are a few reminders:

  • Parent Association new parent breakfast will be held on Monday, September 4th at 8:45am in Star Plaza and PA elections will follow the breakfast.
  • Admission process is still open if you know of anyone who is interested in coming to ECA. Please have them contact Ana Cristina Oteyza.
  • ASA or after school activities begin this Monday! You will be receiving more detailed information today. For families that were unable to attend our registration day on Wednesday but are still interested in having their children participate please read the information coming and send your child directly to that activity to speak with the coach so they can still join. We will send you a survey soon to receive your feedback on the new process this year.
  • Information about VANAS activities in secondary school will be coming out this week.
  • Thank you to those parents who were able to accompany us at the BTSN or Back to School Nights. In general positive feedback was received during these meetings but we want to hear from all of you who participated so I will be sending a short survey to gather feedback and look at how we can improve these events for you in the future.
  • Please make sure your children are reading all the time at home as this is the number one influencing factor for growth in education.
  • This is a special invitation for our entire community to follow the Campo Way and be respectful, responsible, safe, and give your best effort. We have had a few unfortunate incidents of inappropriate behavior from parents and drivers in their cars during pick up and drop off. We will always have a small line and you will need to wait for your children. We have also involved the local police to help us with the traffic on the street so that we are respecting our neighbors as well.

Think about the safety of the children and be patient

Don’t accelerate fast when you are entering or exiting

Arrive early to avoid long lines

Communicate clearly with your children so they are ready when you arrive

Be respectful with our security team as some people have made disrespectful comments and have also put the safety of others at risk in order to avoid a line or get out faster

Thank you for living the ECA mission, vision, and Campo Way!

  • Last weekend our staff completed CPR emergency training and are prepared to help with emergencies at school. This weekend our contractors/coaches for ASA are also receiving the same training.
  • Remember that September 22 there are no classes as we are doing professional development with our staff. So, take advantage of the long weekend and plan your vacations now. The October break (7-15) is also coming up so take your vacations together there as well. Please help us to respect the calendar and have all of our students here during the 185 school days that we have.
  • We are happy to share with you that we are replacing clocks in the school with a digital system that is connected to our server and will allow for accurate time to be kept across the entire school. Thanks to Jose Miguel Zapata and the tech and maintenance team for this upgrade.

Have a great weekend and thanks for your continued support! We’re proud to have you as part of the ECA community!

Dear ECA Community,

  1.  ECA Annual) Report 2022-2023: This link will take you to this year’s annual report which was approved by the ECA Board of Directors on June 1, 2023. Here are my annual report concluding remarks:

“I give thanks to and pay tribute to Mr. Smee and the incredible secondary yearbook student team for tirelessly working  to meet their deadlines and producing the “Beating the Odds: yearbook. As you look through the pages of the book you will see the academic year 2022-2023 flash past your eyes and become ECA history. The continued dedication, motivation and professional work of ECA faculty, staff with the strong support of the Parent Association contributed to a successful academic year with a full return to on campus activities and events. On behalf of the ECA Board of Directors and ECA Faculty and staff I thank the ECA parent community for their sustained support during this academic year.

I wish departing community members well with their new living and learning destinations. I congratulate the ECA graduating class of 2023 and wish them success with learning and their lives beyond the gates of ECA. I encourage ECA graduates to keep in touch with each other and with Escuela Campo Alegre!

It has been my honor and a privilege to have worked as ECA Superintendent and interacted with the ECA community during the past seven eventful years – each of them presenting different challenges but always we produced solutions confirming that, after 85 years of operating as an international school, ECA is indeed Here to Stay. 1. Secondary Student Message: *SERVICE LEARNING CANAIMA PROJECT*

Hey there! My name is Fabrizio Centrone, I am a junior at ECA. I am reaching out to you in search of help, because I am organizing a clothes drive (used-good condition) for the community of Canaima. Many of you may not know this, but the community of Canaima is in a harmful financial situation to the point where they can barely sustain their needs. The only job opportunities in Canaima are the mines, which in Venezuela, is a synonym for slavery and labor abuse. We are also rebuilding the local multi-purpose court, which is in a terrible state. This process was started in the previous Semana Santa (April 2-9 2023), and we are hoping to finish this by next month (June 2023). This is a project that will benefit more than 500 children and 300 adults all around the territory of Bolivar State. I am seeking help from any family that can provide me with any of the following:

* Clothes (shirts, pants, shorts, socks, shoes, anything)

* Money (if possible, for the court reconstruction)

* School Supplies

* Sports Supplies

* Medicine

Thank you so much for your time and donations.

Jeff Richardson’s (ECA Superintendent 2023-2026) visit Comments for the ECA community:

On Saturday, March 4th I arrived in Caracas. From the plane I was able to see the beautiful blues of the ocean and the greens of the mountains and vegetation. It reminded me a lot of the scenery of Colombia where I was coming from. From the time I arrived at the airport I was received like family by Terry and Felix. My days and nights have been full of meetings and getting to know many people in the ECA community. From various dinners off campus with Board members to waiting in Star Plaza to receive the staff and students, I have felt at home, at peace, and as part of the community of ECA. As I have walked through the halls and into the classrooms I have felt very proud to have the opportunity to be the next Superintendent and also excited to have my children join the other students at school. The students, staff, board, parent association, and people of Caracas have extended a warm welcome to me during this visit and have made this a memorable time. I am excited to go home and tell my family all about my experience and about you. I will be back in May to close the year with Terry and the community and I look forward to interacting with as many people as possible during that time. Shortly after that I will return in July with my wife, Liliana, my children, Matias and Sofia, and our 3 cocker spaniels. Thank you for welcoming my family and I into your beautiful city of Caracas and for allowing us to become a part of the ECA community. We are excited to join a world class school with a world class community! If you would like to be in contact with me please feel free to reach out to: jeffr@ecak12.com.“

No Surprises – Earlier rather than later: During the coming weeks should you have any concerns about your child’s progress please contact the class / subject teacher, the Principals or the Guidance Counselors.

ECA Semester 2 – Attendance Reminder

Success with academic and social learning requires regular attendance at school. This school calendar link allows parents to plan so as to ensure that students attend school regularly. Students need to be in school unless an illness or other emergency prevents their attendance. Parents should plan vacations and medical / dental visits carefully so that students do not miss school.

Any extended student absences must be requested/discussed and communicated in writing with the school Principals beforehand. The Principals will determine if an absence is considered excused or unexcused. An excused absence is typically caused by a documented personal illness or an unavoidable emergency family situation.

Students are responsible for completing missed work or assignments within a reasonable time as determined by the Principal.

Please note that students are at risk of not passing their academic grade level if unexcused absences exceed 10% in a given school year or/and if missing work / assignments are not completed.

During Semester 2 please plan to ensure maximum student attendance and academic success. Thank you for your support with this.

Should you require any further information please contact Michelle Till (Elementary Principal) or Sean McMahon (Secondary Principal)

Important Phone Number Updates: Please inform the school secretaries (Elementary Secretary or Secondary Secretary) if you have changed your telephone contact details.

Please carefully refer to the notices and information updates sent to you by the Elementary Principal (Michelle Till), class / subject teachers and the Secondary Principal (Sean McMahon)

Hello. Even though we have only 3 days with students, we will be very busy during the coming week with, beginning Wednesday, the Venezuela Association of North American Schools (VANAS) Basketball Sports Tournament being held at ECA.

On Thursday ECA and Colegio Internacional Caracas (CIC) faculty will interact, share and collaborate  professionally with each other – much of the day will be spent with Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) training. Many thanks to the ECA Parent Association for providing an ECA faculty and staff appreciation lunch on this day.

On Friday, 6 other international Venezuelan schools and 140 teacher participants will attend the VANAS 2022 educators’ professional development conference which is hosted and organized by ECA.  9 ECA faculty will make presentations at this conference.

Emergency, Safety and Security Protocols: Given the recent tragic death at Colegio Humboldt some parents and faculty have been asking about ECA student safety, supervision and security procedures. Here is some information which I hope you will find helpful:

  1. Health and Safety is everyones’ responsibility
  2. Here is a link to the ECA Emergency Manual.
  3. At ECA we actively supervise students, in and out of class, as well as continually remind students, faculty and staff about supervision and safety procedures.
  4.  Francisco Hernandez (Director of Support Services including security), Jose Miguel Zapata (ECA Facility Director) and Franklin Valdez (CAPS – the health and safety company, who legally and professionally work with ECA to ensure safety at work protocols are observed according to Venezuelan labor law) are now carefully reviewing the ECA facility infrastructure, safety / security protocols (including parking, car drop off and pick up procedures) and will recommend any safety improvements as needed.
  5. The school nurses are reviewing medical and injury protocols and procedures.
  6. Faculty and staff are reviewing the ECA Emergency Manual and their room, corridor and workspace areas and have been asked to make health and safety recommendations to the Leadership and Administrative teams.

Once I have all of this emergency and safety review information I will be sharing this information with the ECA Human Resources Committee and Board for their review and approval. Following this approval I will then communicate, to the ECA community, any significant changes to the current ECA Emergency Procedures.

Please enjoy the upcoming extended weekend vacation with your family.
